Eternals is officially the first MCU movie to be rotten on Rotten Tomatoes

Marvel’s upcoming Eternals, by Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao, became the first MCU film to earn a Rotten review score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The next Marvel movie, eternal, gave the MCU its first Rotten movie on Rotten tomatoes. eternal is directed by Chloé Zhao, which is the sequel to the film which won the Best Picture Award Land of the nomads. Zhao earned two historical firsts by becoming the first Asian woman to be nominated for the Best Director Oscar, which she later won. In addition to directing, Zhao is credited as one of the screenwriters of eternal, which will bring a new group of heroes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

eternal follows a race of immortal beings who have lived on Earth for thousands of years, observing the rise and fall of human civilizations. Zhao’s film boasts a stellar cast, including Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Madden, Kit Harington and Gemma Chan. Just like James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, eternal will introduce Marvel comic characters who are largely obscure to the general public, with hopes for the same level of success. Early reviews for the film, however, lead to trouble for those ambitions.

On the review aggregator site Rotten tomatoes, eternal it currently holds a 57% rating at the time of writing, making it a Rotten movie. Although 148 critical reviews have already been counted, the film is three points away from the 60% score needed for the Fresh designation. Even the least appreciated of the previous 25 chapters of the MCU managed to overcome this obstacle, making it eternal the first film in the series to earn a Rotten rating.
