Unlike some sitcoms that wear down their welcome after countless seasons, Schitt’s Creek it seemed to end with fans wanting even more from Canadian comedy. The final season offered a charming and satisfying ending for the Rose family and all of their friends, but there were still some plots left open.
Like most shows, Schitt’s Creek it had its share of storylines that ended up going nowhere. In some cases, these stories ran out of gas and were sidelined. In other cases, they were introduced to create a potential story thread that was never mended. While they have been forgotten by the show, it is interesting to look back at these abandoned storylines from Schitt’s Creek.
Updated November 18, 2021 by Colin McCormick: Although it’s only been a little over a year since Schitt’s Creek aired, fans still look back on it fondly and watch it regularly. And through all of the heartwarming scenes and moments of laughter, fans could pick up on some of the show’s storylines that went nowhere. Some of these plots might have been better abandoned, while others might have been interesting if they had been carried on a little longer.
Alexis takes Twyla’s boyfriend
The potential romantic relationship between Alexis and Mutt is quickly hinted at during their first meeting in the first episode of the series. But when Alexis thinks to continue, she discovers that Mutt and Twyla are a couple.
This couple is kept for a few more episodes as they are seen as a not so happy couple. Once Alexis starts seeing Mutt, it is also briefly suggested that Twyla is not happy with this, only that it is never mentioned again. Presumably, there would have been some more fallout from this – or at least, there could have been.
Alexis on the recovery
The love story between Alexis and Ted was one of the best on Schitt’s Creek. Unfortunately, it ended up in a bittersweet way as they each had to go their separate ways while admitting that they helped each other make people better.
After Alexis and Ted’s very emotional breakup, Alexis is seen bouncing around with a much older man who causes concern in the family. But once that relationship ends, her way of dealing with the breakup is ignored, which is odd considering how important it was to her character.
From time to time, characters from outside Schitt’s Creek came who knew the Rose family and always seemed like terrible people. This is the case with Moira’s sister who claims to be there to help but seems to just want to cheer up Moira for her failures.
Given how quirky and hilarious Moira is, getting her sister into the story could have been a lot of fun. However, the character was surprisingly boring compared to Moira which is perhaps why she only makes a single appearance.
The fighting pharmacist
David’s decision to open a shop in Schitt’s Creek was a very important move in his evolution on the show. It also helps start her relationship with Patrick. However, many times it is also suggested that the shop is not very successful.
There are several times when the store’s difficulties are mentioned and a plan to improve the business is suggested. But then, a few episodes later, the shop seems to be going bad again. By the end of the series, Rose Apothecary’s success remains open.
David and Patrick are having a baby
The last season of Schitt’s Creek it’s largely centered around David’s marriage to Patrick. However, even as marriage approaches, new aspects of their relationship are suggested, including a child.
The show addresses this in an interesting way as Patrick mentions the idea only to later admit that he is happy with just the two of them. However, it is left open as a possibility as Patrick says David would make a good father. Despite being a huge tease, it is not addressed for the rest of the series.
David and Stevie
Although Stevie and David don’t get off on the right foot when they first meet, they eventually find they have a lot in common. After dating a group, they inevitably end up sleeping together, leading to a semi-romantic relationship.
Things get complicated when it’s clear this relationship isn’t something both of you want in the long run. However, the show seems to decide that these two characters work best as friends. After sharing a kiss, they both admit the spark is gone and move on.
Roland owns Motel
When the Rose family arrives Schitt’s Creek, are greeted by the mayor of the city, Roland Schitt. However, the first two episodes also seem to imply that Roland is also the owner of the motel where the Roses end up living and where Stevie works.
Roland tells the Roses that he arranged for the Roses to get two rooms at the motel for their living room, which seems to suggest that he had some influence on Stevie in that matter. However, as the series progresses, it is clear that Roland has nothing to do with the motel and later becomes an employee there. Of course, it could simply be that Roland’s influence was purely because he is the mayor of a small town.
Selling the city
As soon as they arrive at Schitt’s Creek, the Rose family begins desperately looking for a way to escape this new existence and regain their former life of wealth. Johnny’s solution is to sell off the city since he owns it.
This becomes a very significant storyline for the show’s first season, including getting Roland to sign the deal and attempting to find a profitable buyer. In the Season 1 finale, Johnny finds an available buyer who dies shortly before signing the deal. Despite getting so close, this idea is never proposed again.
Mutt and Tennessee
The spark between Alexis and Mutt is established very early in the series. However, it appears that the show was betting on the wrong horse as fans seemed to prefer Alexis and Ted as a couple. After a quick breakup with Alexis, Mutt begins dating a new girl named Tennessee.
It felt like the relationship was introduced for a reason, but the show couldn’t tell what the reason was. First, it looks like it’s meant to make Alexis jealous, but then it moves on to Tennessee being the only one jealous of Alexis. Eventually, everything is sidelined and Tennessee is eliminated from the show.
Twyla and Ivan
The bizarre character of Ivan is introduced in the second season but only makes an appearance. When he returns for season three, the show must remind everyone who he is before trying a new storyline with him.
Ivan confides in Johnny that he has a crush on Twyla and seeks Johnny’s help to woo her. It seems that a bizarre side romance is taking place on the show, but Ivan once again disappears from the show and this time around.
Mutt is Jocelyn and Roland’s son
It appears that Mutt was originally meant to be a much more important character on the show before plans changed. Before starting a romance with him, Alexis noticed Mutt with Jocelyn Schitt and thought they were having an affair. As it turned out, Mutt is actually the son of Roland and Jocelyn.
This was treated as if it were a big revelation, but it actually came to nothing. Even the idea of Roland disapproving of his son and wanting him to take over as mayor was presented and then never mentioned again.
Stevie seeks new meaning
While the show was largely about growing the Rose family, there were also some secondary characters who went through interesting arcs in Schitt’s Creek. Stevie Budd has become quite a central character and the show followed her as she overcame her lack of confidence.
This also resulted in Stevie’s removal from the motel and the decision that she wanted to find her own path in life. But after an episode with her in a new job, Stevie changes her mind and heads back to the motel, which seemed like an unnecessary little detour.
Getting married at the Motel
After getting engaged at the end of season five, the show’s final season deals with David and Patrick planning their wedding. They end up losing the place of their dreams in the first episode of the sixth season only for Patrick who suggests they get married at the motel.
This seems to create an ending that makes a lot of sense as the motel was the main setting for the show. But perhaps the cost of an outdoor wedding scene was too high. Nothing else is mentioned about the place until the finale, when bad weather forces them to move indoors.
Johnny’s business partner
The series began with the Rose family falling from wealth to poverty in the blink of an eye. It was all due to Johnny’s business partner who stole millions from their company before fleeing the country.
The first episode mentions that the business partner is still on the run, which he felt like a plan to reveal himself eventually in the series leading to justice or forgiveness for Johnny and his family. Instead, the shady businessman apparently remains on the loose by the end of the show.
The romance between David and Patrick has been one of the most popular sitcom relationships in recent memory. They have overcome many obstacles but have remained a strong and fascinating couple through it all. However, one of their biggest obstacles ended up being nothing.
When a young woman shows up at the motel, it is revealed that it is Patrick’s ex-girlfriend who has come to win him back. This creates a brief trouble in heaven for David and Patrick, but they quickly get over it. However, there is no resolution on the girlfriend or her closure with Patrick.
