In many ways, the ’90s were an excellent decade, filled with fashion trends, iconic TV shows, and an explosion of award-winning films in every genre. Even as times have changed and some movies have aged, there are gems of the ’90s that will stand the test of time and remain fan favorites, particularly when it comes to the romantic movies of the decade.

Sure, there’s the typical boy-meets-girl, boy-and-girl-in-love-and-happily-ever-after story, but in the 1990s, directors knew there had to be something more. Romantic movies that came out of the 1990s also launched many modern-day A-lister careers, with beautiful storylines that were not only intriguing but mixed in a healthy dose of fairy tale and real-life situations.

10 1990 – Beautiful woman

Starting the decade with a bang, Pretty Woman gave the world a strange love story of two people who came from different worlds. When Edward Lewis, played by Richard Gere, is in Beverly Hills on business, he takes the opportunity to go to Hollywood Boulevard in search of an escort for the week, who will have no ties or heartbreak opportunities.

Edward finds Vivian Ward, played by Julia Roberts, who accepts the plan and is given a whole new look to match these high society events. Things change when Vivian and Edward get to know each other and fall in love at the end of the week. While this wasn’t Julia’s first role in Hollywood, her portrayal of Vivian in Pretty Woman launched his career into superstar status.

Set in the Louisiana countryside and set in 1957, Elvis Presley was all the rage. Dani Trant, played by Witherspoon, is a 14-year-old girl who is discovering adolescence and growing up. When a widow and her children move in next door, everything seems to change.

Dani falls in love with 17-year-old Court Foster, though she doesn’t necessarily feel the same way. After falling in love with Dani’s sister Maureen, however, Dani experiences her first heartbreak, loss and how much her family means to her in the end. Reese Witherspoon has starred in many films since 1991, but Man on the moon it will be known as his first major film debut and one of his best roles.

After going through many partners so far, Kate teams up with Doug, who just wants to skate again and go to the Olympics. After trial and error, long days on the ice and many disagreements, they begin to fall in love with each other as their next chance at gold is just around the corner.

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are not only known as big movie stars, but also as the protagonists of one of the most famous films of the 90s: Sleepless in Seattle. Tom Hanks is Sam, father and widower. He moves to Seattle with his son to start over. Months later, at the suggestion of his son, Sam goes on a radio show to explain how much he misses his wife, while thousands of women across the country listen.

When Annie Reed, played by Meg Ryan, hears Sam on the radio, she wants to meet him, despite being engaged. It is then that Sam and Annie fall in love from afar, without knowing who the other is. Tom Hanks was busy making memorable films in the 1990s and another of his most famous roles is Forrest in Forrest Gump. There really isn’t any other movie like it and Tom was the perfect actor to play the role. Some people might argue that this film is more of a drama, but it also has an underlying love story. Forrest Gump is an Alabama man with some learning difficulties, but he proves that anyone can make their dreams come true if they work there.

After going through a bully-haunted childhood, Vietnam, jogging across the country, and being a successful ping-pong player, all Forrest really wants is to reunite with his childhood sweetheart, Jenny Curran, a troubled woman who lived the fast life. That doesn’t matter to Forrest, and the film shows how perseverance and true love endure. There are some blockbuster movies from the 90s, but without a doubt, Forrest Gump he is one who defined cinema.

5 1995 – Before dawn

Before sunrise follows Jesse, played by Ethan Hawke, who is a tourist in France. By chance, he meets Céline, a local, and connects so well with her that he asks her to spend the day with him before his flight back to America.

They don’t have a lot of time, but with the time they have, they connect on a deep level at a fast pace. They share everything with each other, thinking they will never see each other again. Although the next day is on their minds, the connection they have is true, touching, and terribly romantic.

William can’t believe he has the attention of one of the most beautiful women in the world, but he also realizes that being with a woman like her means a lot of attention. Some movies have aged a bit since the 90s, but Notting Hill remains an excellent rom-com.
